History
Seabright Cottage was the beloved home of Doris Anderson. Doris was an English nurse, who after working in India came to settle here on Salt Spring Island. She had the house built in 1964. For many years she worked at the old hospital and later at the new one as a nurse.
Doris was well known for re-introducing the ancient art of breast-feeding, and had written a book on the subject. Doris was also very active in the community and was one of the 12 original members of the Salt Spring Hiking Club.
In her declining years she asked us to take over her home. She needed money to take one more trip around the world. On the way she wanted to visit the orphanage she supported in Katmandu. Many Island people remember Doris's campaign " Salal for Nepal" She invited friends to help her pick Salal which she sold to florists. The money thus raised was sent to the orphanage in Katmandu.
When she died in 1982 we celebrated her life right here on the shore and scattered her ashes in the ocean. Even though we have owned Seabright Cottage for many years, in our family it is still known as Doris's place.
Over the years many people have lived here. Among them are Carol Evans, the well-known Salt Spring painter. Earlier, while Doris was still alive, the British writer and broadcaster Malcolm Muggeridge wrote a book here. Everyone who has lived here has experienced a spiritual connection to Seabright Cottage.
